Pivot:
Contemporary Lighting

Inspired by Castiglioni's Saliscendi pendant and the integral pulley system, Pivot is a lamp designed under the framework of visible mechanics. Pivot’s center pole has screw-like threading to allow the head to spin up and down.

Inspiration

Castiglioni’s Saliscendi pendant, designed in 1957, centers on the pulley system. This pulley allows for the user to adjust their light concentration and how the piece interacts with their overall space.

After further analysis, I identified three main frameworks that are
integral to the design.

1. Visible Mechanics: the pulley system is clearly shown.
2. Dual Light Sources: both the top and bottom of the head expel light.
3. Adjustable Lighting: the movable head effects light concentration.

Ideation

Ideation

I used these three frameworks, Visible Mechanics, Dual Light Sources, Adjustable Lighting, to guide initial ideation.

Sketch Refinement

After being drawn to the screw head function, I continued ideation on the basic form, finally setting on the cylindrical form to keep the emphasis on the threaded center.

Prototyping

To gain an understanding of the proportion and compositional need, I started with a paper model and then turned to a 3d printed model for a higher fidelity.

Paper Model Findings:

1. good proportions between elements

2. like the repetition of cylinders

3. need to CAD for further exploration

3D Model Findings:

1. screw is too prominent, disrupts form

2. screw length is overpowering

3. spinning method feels awkward

CAD Refinement

To gain an understanding of the proportion and compositional need, I started with a paper model and then turned to a 3d printed model for a higher fidelity.

Top
The top needed an indication to stop twisting the light up. The flat disk related to the other cylinders without excessive repetition.

Proportion
The proportion of the model needed further exploration in order to balance the prevalence of the screw with the head and base forms. The tall base keeps this balance and grounds the rest of the lamp.

Introducing Pivot

Pivot is a contemporary lamp with adjustable lighting and the visible mechanic of a center screw. The form is simple and repetitive to highlight the function of the threading. The cord is red to add a pop of color to the otherwise white design.

How It Moves

Spin Pivot’s head up and down the threading to adjust the light concentration.

Dramatically raise and lower the head by holding the body and spinning the top or adjust Pivot with the divot for more control.
